At The Velvet Bar, every swirl of icing, every crumb of cake, and every bite of red velvet tells a story — April Berry's story. A self-taught baker known as Bar Chef Flawless, April is a wife, mother, and proud Florida native whose journey led her to Atlanta, where she found her purpose through desserts made with soul.
What started in a cozy two-bedroom apartment during the spring of 2020 blossomed into more than just a bakery — it became a movement. After juggling a full-time job at Delta Dental and doing hair on the side, April spent her nights mixing, baking, and creating with love and intention. Every dessert was handcrafted with passion, poured from her family's support — her mama and aunt, her in-loves, best friends, and especially her husband, who believed in her from day one. Her son lends a hand as the unofficial "staff," and the spirit of her beloved pup, Blu Berry, who passed in January 2024, still lingers sweetly in the shop.
Inspired by the way your grandma made red velvet — with pride, purpose, and a whole lot of love — April created a brand built on luxury flavor, Southern warmth, and the kind of cake that makes you fall in love at first bite.
Her big break came when Breakfast at Barney's featured her signature dessert: a bold 12-layer red velvet cake that quickly evolved into the now-famous 24-Layer Red Velvet Champagne Cake, enjoyed by celebrities, politicians, and dessert lovers nationwide.
In July 2021, April opened The Velvet Bar's first storefront in Riverside (Upper West Midtown), transforming her passion into a full dessert experience. From decadent cake jars to red velvet cookies, cheeky DIY cake classes, and custom dessert catering, The Velvet Bar isn't just a place — it's a vibe.
Beyond sweets, April believes in purpose. She gives back through desserts, partnering with youth organizations and schools to pour into the next generation, reminding them that creativity, consistency, and kindness can change lives.
